No. 25 Wyoming overpowers Air Force, 36-9, behind avalanche of bonus points

Wyoming used six bonus-point victories — including a heavyweight technical fall and multiple pins and majors — to turn a competitive opening stretch into a runaway dual in Laramie.

Wyoming turned a string of dominant finishes into a 36-9 victory over Air Force in Laramie, the Cowboys’ depth and bonus production decisive in the final margin.

The dual was decided by bonus-point bouts across the card. Wyoming collected six bonus wins that supplied the bulk of the team scoring and put the match out of reach early. Luke Willochell’s pin at 133 vaulted the Cowboys into clear control, and late technical and major decisions widened the gap at key junctures.

No. 7 Christian Carroll closed the night with a 21-6 technical fall at heavyweight, setting an aggressive tone. Transcripts show Carroll striking with multiple takedowns across the opening periods that pushed the bout toward the stoppage, and the technical fall came before the full seven minutes elapsed.

Wyoming’s No. 9 Eddie Neitenbach delivered another high-leverage bonus result at 184, rolling to a 20-5 technical fall that added an important five team points and further blunted any Air Force rally.

Air Force did salvage a few highlight results. Senior 125-pounder Tucker Owens produced an 18-1 technical fall that featured heavy nearfall scoring in the middle stanza, and freshman Karson Tompkins at 197 finished with an 11-1 major decision to keep the Falcons on the board late.

Depth swings mattered as much as the headline names. Wyoming recorded multiple majors, pins and techs from the middle weights — including a fall at 174 and majors at 149 and 157 — that converted solid individual performances into a decisive team outcome.

Wyoming’s win also arrived with roster context: the Cowboys entered the dual ranked and kept a spot among national teams, while Wyoming’s lineup was missing All-American Joey Novak, who did not wrestle and has been listed out of recent duals with a tweaked shoulder.

When the mat was rolled up the Cowboys had turned six bonus wins into 30 bonus points and a comfortable 36-9 final margin, leaving Air Force’s two bonus results unable to match the cumulative surge.
