No. 4 Iowa defeats No. 6 Nebraska 22-14 in Lincoln
Iowa collected bonus points at 149 and 165 and held off Nebraska before a record Devaney Sports Center crowd.
LINCOLN, Neb. — No. 4 Iowa beat No. 6 Nebraska 22-14 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Jan. 23, with bonus-point results and a string of narrow decisions deciding the dual.
Ryder Block, listed at No. 10, supplied one of the match’s biggest swings when he pinned Chance Lamer at 149 pounds, a fall that produced six team points for the Hawkeyes. Michael Caliendo, No. 3, added a 14-4 major decision at 165 that yielded four more bonus points and padded Iowa’s margin.
Nebraska answered with a 20-5 technical fall from No. 11 Camden McDanel at 197, a five-point team outcome that kept the Cornhuskers within reach late in the dual. The dual also featured multiple tight, ranked decisions that factored into the final score: Patrick Kennedy, No. 3, prevailed 2-1 in overtime at 174, and Iowa’s Gabe Arnold defeated No. 7 Silas Allred 4-1 at 184.
Nebraska picked up other wins, including No. 3 Brock Hardy’s 1-0 decision at 141 and AJ Ferrari’s 4-1 victory at 285, but Iowa’s two bonus victories combined with a string of one- and two-point decisions to create a margin the Cornhuskers could not overcome.
The dual was staged before a reported Devaney Sports Center crowd that set a program attendance mark, and the result marked head coach Tom Brands’ 300th win at Iowa, according to team reports.
Iowa won six of the 10 matches and converted two bonus outcomes into a decisive team advantage in a meeting that featured several ranked matchups and multiple overtime and sudden-death sequences.
