Iowa @ Northwestern Recap

Iowa Men's Wrestling blanked Northwestern 46-0 in Illinois on January 28, 2024, building a shutout with a string of bonus-point wins that kept Northwestern off the scoreboard. The Hawkeyes collected tech falls, majors and pins across the card to turn what could have been a close Big Ten dual into a lopsided team victory.

Drake Ayala’s 19-4 technical fall at 125 pounds set a physical tone, and Michael Caliendo’s 21-5 technical fall at 165 added a dominant middleweight showing. Caleb Rathjen’s fall at 149 pounds and Ben Kueter’s match-clinching fall at heavyweight were the two biggest swings, each worth six team points and pushing the dual well past reach. Those pins, combined with multiple technical falls, provided the cushion that decided the meet.

Iowa also picked up major decisions at 174 and 197, with Patrick Kennedy and Zach Glazier each earning four team points and helping maintain the margin even in bouts that didn’t end by fall. While Northwestern stayed competitive in portions of several matches, the Hawkeyes’ collection of bonus wins prevented any sustained comeback.

In the end, bonus scoring was the difference. Iowa’s combination of three technical falls, two pins and a pair of majors produced the 46-point margin and a complete team shutout on the road.
