Minnesota @ Illinois Recap
Minnesota knocked off Illinois 28-12 at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL on February 9, 2024. The visitors’ margin of victory was built on a handful of high-impact results rather than a wide spread of decision wins, and those bonus points decided the dual.
At 149 pounds Drew Roberts supplied the first large swing, downing Jake Harrier 15-3 for a major decision and four team points. That result gave Minnesota a clear advantage on the score sheet and forced Illinois to look for match-clinching bonus themselves to close the gap. Roberts’ major stood out because it was one of only a couple of non-pin bonus results in the lineup.
The rest of the difference came from pins. Michael Blockhus recorded a fall at 157 pounds, Garrett Joles pinned his man at 197 pounds, and Bennett Tabor finished in the same fashion at heavyweight. Those three falls were worth six team points apiece and turned a close meet into a one-sided score, supplying 18 points that Minnesota needed to secure the road victory.
In the end Minnesota’s four bonus-point victories accounted for the bulk of the 28 team points, and Illinois could not match that level of bonus scoring. The 16-point final margin reflected Minnesota’s ability to convert opportunities into majors and falls, a decisive factor in this Big Ten dual in Champaign.
