American @ Michigan State Recap

American University left East Lansing with a 20-17 dual victory over Michigan State at Michigan State University on December 18, 2025. The narrow three-point margin came down to bonus-point production and a key win over a ranked opponent.

American collected three bonus wins that proved decisive. Raymond Lopez piled up a 17-4 major decision at 141 pounds for four team points, and Leo Maestas added the biggest swing with a fall at 149 for six points. Those two results alone gave American a sizable bonus cushion, and Caleb Campos, ranked #29, underlined the effort with a 10-0 major decision over Cory Thomas at 184 for another four team points. The three bonus victories accounted for 14 of American’s 20 team points.

Michigan State answered with a big performance from #33 Kael Wisler at 197, who scored a 20-4 technical fall worth five team points and pulled the hosts back into contention. Wisler’s tech fall created a late surge and kept the dual within reach, but it was not enough to erase the bonus-point gap created by American’s trio of bonuses. The math left American with six additional points from the rest of the lineup and Michigan State with 12 points outside Wisler’s win.

Ultimately the major decisions and the pin made the difference. Campos’s 10-0 major over a ranked opponent and Maestas’s fall supplied the margin American needed to withstand Michigan State’s comeback attempt and walk away 20-17.
