Minnesota @ Iowa Recap

Minnesota knocked off Iowa 21-16 at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City on Jan. 30, 2026, pulling out the dual thanks to a string of bonus-point wins and a key upset. The Golden Gophers collected multiple majors and a late decision that built a cushion Iowa could not fully erase.

Minnesota’s bonus work was decisive. #8 Jore Volk handed Joey Cruz a 10-0 major decision at 125 to supply four team points, and #19 Charlie Millard added another major decision, beating #11 Jordan Williams 13-3 at 157. In between, #26 Drew Roberts pulled off the one upset of the night, edging #11 Ryder Block 4-2 at 149 to keep Minnesota’s edge intact.

Iowa answered with its own big result when #9 Drake Ayala blew up a 21-6 technical fall at 133 for five team points, and the Hawkeyes picked up late major decisions at the upper weights to trim the gap. Those efforts narrowed the score, but Iowa’s bonus scoring came a half-step late relative to Minnesota’s earlier majors and the upset that swung the middle of the lineup.

In the end Minnesota’s accumulation of bonus points proved the difference in a tight Big Ten duel. The four-point majors and the upset by Roberts gave the Gophers the margin they needed, and Iowa’s late rally fell short in a 21-16 final.
